Inspired by Thomas Hart Benton’s Spring Tryout (1946)

Every winter,
without fail,
by life,
I am stolen away.
Every year,
it comes.
The annual trial,
demands more and more of me,
as it tests my will.
Yet, every year,
to the season,
to it’s chill and numbing gusts,
to it’s harsh and freezing gales,
I surrender.

Afraid, I resign.
I just let myself,
be dragged along.
The reigns for control,
slips through my fingers,
and unresolved,
I fold under myself.

But right when all,
seems lost and without worth,
just as my fate feels decided,
I snatch life within my hands once more!
With whatever authority I can muster,
whatever strength left to give,
I seize and clench it tighter!

I still strain,
to the powerful tugging,
but all is made,
thrilling and energizing.
To the relentless bucking,
I begin to refuse any submission,
because wherever I am to be taken,
that is wherever I will be!
No matter how blue,
winter’s winds make me,
spring comes to anew me with life.
So I just hold on until then!
