Not just your perspective or what story you think deserves the title, but very way you comprehend it!
As I understand it, The Great American Novel is a self-contradicting notion, a paradox. To achieve the paradoxical dream, I believe the approach has to be different. A parallel to the paradox must be made, the idea itself has to simultaneously be deconstructed and reconstructed!
To tell a story that parallels the paradox, it’s necessary that different elements of metafiction are present within the narrative. That’s why I want you, the reader, to be aware of my aspirations for The Great American Novel and play an active role in the story. By challenging you, the reader, for The Great American Novel in both the literal and figurative senses the idea will be deconstructed. As The Dream Series is written, I plan to reconstruct the idea by providing depictions of what I believe The Great American Novel to be. So that when The Dream Series is completed and published you can play your role in the story and make the final decision.
Were my words about The Great American Novel truthful? Were any of my depictions of the idea accurate? Was the dream achieved?
